“A disarming and heartfelt ode to small-town, Main Street movie theaters…personal filmmaking at its best.”
– Leonard Maltin
KPAC presents THE LAST PICTURE SHOWS. Ten states. 10,825 miles. 123 theaters. An elegy for small-town cinemas.
Filmmaker Rustin Thompson journeys across the American West in search of the movie theaters that once served as centers of small-town life. Along the way, he discovers abandoned cinemas, struggling theaters, and thriving movie houses kept alive by dedicated caretakers. Interweaving these stories with excerpts from Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show, the film explores the challenges facing theatrical exhibition in an era of consolidation and streaming, while celebrating movie theaters as places of wonder, community, and connection. The film will be followed by a Zoom Q&A with director Rustin Thompson.
