Barbara Kopple’s classic documentary Harlan County, USA (1976) provides a heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a coal-mining community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line. The film won an Oscar for Best Documentary in 1976. The years that have followed have enshrined Kopple’s film as one of the greatest cinematic works dedicated to addressing labor rights and civil liberties in America.
